STMA Driver Education Classroom Policies & Information

STMA In-Person Driver Education (DE) classes are held at St. Michael-Albertville High School, 5800 Jamison Ave. NE, St. Michael, MN 55376.

No one is allowed to miss the 1st day of class without prior approval.

  1. PERFECT ATTENDANCE IS EXPECTED! Driver Education classes are scheduled for 30 classroom hours of instruction. Students must attend all 30 classroom hours in order to pass the class and move forward with obtaining a driver license. If a student misses a class, he/she must have PRIOR APPROVAL from the instructor. If a class is missed, attending the make-up class is required. Refer to the class schedule for the make-up session.
  • The Instructor takes attendance daily.
  • State Law for students under 18 years of age must be in attendance for 30 hours of classroom instruction.
  • Because there is only one 3-hour makeup session, students needing more than three hours of make-up time will be WITHDRAWN and must REPEAT ALL 30 hours of classroom instruction. Additional fees may apply.
  1.  Students are issued a Drive Right hardcover book, workbook, and other materials on the first day of class. All materials including the Minnesota Driver's Manual should be brought to every class. The hardcover book must be turned into the instructor on the last day of class in order to move forward with obtaining their driver's license. Families are responsible for any lost or damaged books.

  2.  After completing the STMA In-Person DE Classroom hours, students must wait at least three (3) Community Education (CE) Business Days before making an appointment to take the Written Test with the State of MN/DVS. The State of MN/DVS will send a confirmation email to the email address listed when registering for the STMA DE class.  Students must be 15 years or older to take the Written Test.
  • Once the student has passed the Written Test, the student’s parent/guardian along with the student driver must email stmadrivered@mystma.com.  This process will place the student driver on the BTW List to start BTW Instruction.
  1. After completing the STMA BTW Training, student must bring their Instruction Permit and Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Evaluation form to the Community Education (CE) Office (during CE Business Days and Hours), located at 60 Central Avenue West, St. Michael, MN (behind the “historic” Catholic Church on Highway 19.  Enter Door B).

  2. Parent/Student Meetings are scheduled periodically throughout year. If you and your student attend the Parent/Student Meeting, your student will complete 40 logged hours of driving time and a Certificate of Completion will be issued and handed out when the student stops by the CE Office with their Instruction Permit and BTW Instructor’s Lesson Evaluation.
  • If the Parent/Student Meeting was not attended, your student is required to complete 50 logged hours of driving.
