Adult Basic Education Classes
West Adult Basic Education (ABE)
A free Community Education program to help adults aged 17 or older develop their basic skills such as reading, writing, math, work skills, English, and technology. Students must not be enrolled in secondary school to participate.
English as a Second Language (ESL) / English Language Learners (ELL) & English Transitions Class
For individuals whose first language is not English. Emphasis is on pronunciation, vocabulary, speaking, reading, and writing. Friendly classroom setting. Pre-Literacy/Beginning to Advanced Level Groups. Students use books, iPads, and computers to learn in a teacher-led class. There is no fee for these classes, just show up.
Morning and Evening classes are held at:
Community Education Center, 60 Central Ave. West, St. Michael, MN 55376
Room 305 (Enter Door A, parking lot behind the Catholic Church)
The room is located on the 3rd floor, take the stairs or use the elevator
ESL/ELL (Morning Class):
Mondays & Wednesdays
Class begins Monday, September 9
- 9:00-11:30 a.m.
- Classes are ongoing (School Year Only)
- Free childcare is available by calling 763-497-6550 at least two days prior to class.
- Registration and testing to determine language level - all done within the classroom.
ESL/ABE Transitions Class
This class is open to ESL students who have exited ESL or are at a high advanced level. Students can study for their GED, college prep, basic skills, and English for driving. Instruction will be focused on the individual's needs, plus increased understanding, pronunciation, and usage of the English language. There is no fee for this class, just show up.
English Transitions (Evening Class):
Tuesdays & Thursdays
Class begins Tuesday, September 3
- 6-8:30 p.m.
- Classes are ongoing (School Year Only)
GED Testing
Register to take the official test at: ged.com or call 763-272-2040. Computer test only.
There are 4 parts to the test ($30 for each test):
Science (90 mins.)
Social Studies (75 mins.)
Reasoning/Language Arts (155 mins)
Mathematical/Reasoning (120 mins.)
Rewarding Volunteer Opportunities!
Make a difference in your community. As a volunteer, you can help adult learners reach their goals. Work with adult students as they learn English, prepare for the GED, get citizenship, learn computer skills, and more. No experience or diploma needed. We provide training and support.
